Early this morning, Twitter was flooded with complaints about Google Search Console missing the usual “average position” section.
Indeed, logging into Google Search Console reveals a very unfamiliar sight: the average position section was entirely gone.
John Mueller confirmed to us at iloveseo.com that it is, indeed, a bug:
It's a bug – and hopefully it'll move on to a green field that's not connected to the internet soon.

Indeed, more and more people began commenting that they were missing the average position metric:
oops, I don't think that was meant to go away. I'll check.

Google has just "removed" the Average Position metric from Google Search Console with no prior warning. So…. If you're looking for it, you're not alone. Only available when you compare. Hi @JohnMu & @rustybrick
I noticed the "avg position" section not showing on the "Google search console" (India).
Did you notice something related? Is this new testing or any kind of issue by Google?

What’s The Current Status?
As of now, most average search positions in Google Search Console should be restored.
Indeed, our own is fully restored.
So far, it looks like this was just a temporary glitch.
