Google reported on Friday, July 15th that they were experiencing a severe outage of their indexing services.
They explained that it’s an ongoing issue that they have experienced with their indexing services in the past.
There's an ongoing issue with indexing in Google Search that's affecting a large number of sites. Sites may experience delayed indexing. We're working on identifying the root cause. Next update will be within 12 hours.

It's worth noting that I was helping a site yesterday and this morning that was experiencing indexing issues. And their traffic from Google was down about 20%. Some pages deindexed, but then return later on. Something weird is going on. https://t.co/oVaiBvIoOE

Also worth noting that I checked the site's top landing pages in bulk via the URL Inspection API, which said all were indexed but one. Yet inspecting them one by one yielded "crawled, not indexed" for some. So something is off. Hopefully Google rectifies the issues quickly.
